The Modern Band experience is energetic, creative, and student-centered — helping young musicians develop performance skills, confidence, teamwork, and musical expression through popular music styles.
What Is Modern Band?
Modern Band is a music education approach that teaches students through the music they know and enjoy. Students rehearse and perform together much like a real band while learning:
-
Ensemble collaboration
-
Rhythm and groove
-
Listening skills
-
Song structure
-
Creativity and improvisation
-
Stage presence and confidence
FEMEA’s Modern Band Honors ensembles bring together selected students from across Florida for a special regional honor experience.
How Students Participate
Step 1: Audition
Students submit a short video audition performing part of the selected audition song on their chosen instrument or voice part. Students may audition on more than one instrument.
Step 2: Selection
Selected students are invited to participate in a regional honor ensemble experience with guest clinicians and conductors.
Step 3: Festival Day
Students spend the day rehearsing, collaborating, and preparing for a culminating performance for families and guests.
